Two of my shows got canceled…Moonlight being my favorite one…But October Road was canceled too. But unlike CBS, ABC cares about their fans. They may not be bringing the show back for the season but they are trying to make fans happy by wrapping up the loose ends.
Of course, that wouldn’t be good enough for me for Moonlight but at least ABC listened. I swear I was the only one that watched that show but now I can see the end. Because it was a great show. So what is CBS’ problem…they are being hugely stubborn. Wake up guys…smell the coffee…these vampires won’t stop fighting.

I totally agree with you about Moonlight. CBS really messed up by canceling the show. How could they not realize that they were on the leading edge of the vampire mania that is on its way with Twilight and the new HBO series? Not to mention that Moonlight had such a talented and charismatic cast and was finally starting to hit its stride. Seemed like a no-brainer, CBS!
This post is absolutely spot-on. I applaud ABC for being kind to their loyal October Road fans – maybe CBS will take the hint. Moonlight is sorely missed by its fans, and we’re all hoping by some miracle our beloved show will come back.
And just what loose ends does CBS need to tie up with Moonlight? The mysterious list of vampire names? Whatever. What happened when Beth’s door closed? I could be sick. Hopefully Mick came to his senses and left to find somebody hot – nuf for me. What happened to his wife when they took her away? Unfortunately they don’t care because of blind beth love. yuk.
@Stacy…there are really no loose ends other than that list that DA was sent. The point was that ABC listened to the 5 viewers of the show and are bringing it back…at least to wrap up the loose ends. CBS hasn’t even acknowledged the fans of Moonlight and that’s why I wrote this.
Moonlight was a fantastic show. It was different from all the mudane that’s out there. I never watched CBS. I only started watching CBs because of Moolight. It was the only show I liked on that channel. It had everything, you had action, suspense, humor, intriguw and of course the best romance on television between the two main characters Mick and Beth. CBS pulled a fast one on us by cancelling the most amazing show. With all the reports about Moonlight returning for a second season made us all happy. Then CBS went and did the unthinkable and pulled the rug right from under us and cancelled the series. The fans were devasted I just can’t just imagine how cast and crew felt.. I hate CBS for what they did. I haven’t watched CBS since May 16th which was the last episode of Moonlight.
I’m so glad the ABC viewers got some results and closer. It is time CBS did the same for Moonlight fans. Wow do they really want to lose 8 million + viewers. If they keep running things this way they will go under for sure!
It certainly looks like that ABC cares more about its viewers than does CBS. I have never been so captivated by a show as I have been by Moonlight. I am still outraged with CBS for cancelling Moonlight and then Nina Tassler laughing about it. CBS is banned in my house because of their attitude towards Moonlight fans. I went from watching about 10 hours a week on CBS to zero. Come fall, I will be checking out the other networks for my viewing and will start with ABC since they apparently care for their viewers, unlike CBS. CBS is dead to me.
[[CBS hasn’t even acknowledged the fans of Moonlight and that’s why I wrote this.]]
Excellent point, thank you! Not only did CBS not listen to the legion of fans, they actually wrote us off as “rabid” or slightly unbalanced. CBS execs actually made fun of us and said that we would forget about Moonlight when fall came around. They led us on to believe that Moonlight was coming back in the fall and at the last minute, let the ax fall. They went as far as scheduling the reruns to air and then ripping them off at the last minute. Not a very nice thing to do to an 8 million strong fan base that voted for Moonlight to be the People’s Choice Award winner for best drama in 2008. I have chosen to not watch CBS from this point on. After being a loyal to them for many years, this is how they treat their viewers; by making fun of them and totally ingnoring their pleas? I am done with CBS.
I never watched October Road but I applaud ABC for listening to their fans. That is more than CBS bothered to do.
@pinkiepie230
Thanks. I just can’t get over how October Road didn’t have that many fans (besides me) and they are doing something to at least tell that they care about the fans when CBS has done nothing. It really frustrates me because I love Moonlight. I even wrote a letter to Alex directly saying that I fell in love with Mick. It’s not fair to the 8million viewers.
Thanks so much for writing this. CBS was so terribly wrong in canceling Moonlight. They had to know of the fan base and how devoted it is and they had to know that a first season show that was winning its time slot would continue to grow in a second season. They shot themselves in the foot. Although I agree, Moonlight does not need loose ends tied up, it needs a whole season (or two or three or…..) to expand the wonderful story. Good for ABC. Since I had to give up some shows I liked on CBS (blocked on my TV permanently), I will check out ABC out of respect for what they have done listening to the fans. No, Moonlight fans will not give up.
I wouldn’t be satisfied with CBS just tying up some loose ends, I want a full second season (and a third eventually). The story was just beginning to come into its own. Moonlight was a show for the whole family, and is hugely popular in Europe now (highest grossing show in the younger audience in Germany). CBS sure missed the bandwagon with their decision.
Thanks for writing about this. It certainly gives me positive vibes about ABC and only (seriously)negative ones about CBS. AFter they canceled Moonlight I haven’t watched a single show on that station. Not only for canceling a show with great potential, but because the rest of their programs really stink. Who do they think are tuning in? It ain’t their targeted audience, that’s for sure. They are too busy watching whatever they want, whenever they want via the internet, ipods and TIVO. Wake up CBS! You really screwed up! Kudos to ABC!
CBS has been so sneaky about its cancellation also. Only if you have been on the websites would you even KNOW about it! Many assume it will be back next season. Not only that, but they pulled their PLANNED reruns almost to spite the Moonlight fans.
I call CBS the Crappy Back Stabbers. You can say GOODBYE to my viewership.
@francis…I don’t want to them to tie up loose ends. I would love another five seasons. The point I was making was that they are listening to their fans where CBS isn’t.
It’s bad enough CBS cancelled my favorite show, Moonlight, but they way they did it was so totally unprofessional that I totally gave up CBS viewing after May 16th. I realize networks think their true customers are advertisers, but they can’t promise advertisers my 18-49 year old female eyeballs and then basically give me the finger when I tell them what I want to watch. With TV viewership declining across the board, viewers aren’t as interchangeable as they might have been in the past. They are going to be surprised when alot of their former audience doesn’t return in the fall.
Thanks for writing this. There may not be “loose ends” per say, but the Moonlight story was just about to kick into full gear. I want to see how Mick and Beth handle their relationship, and if she will ultimately be turned one day, or if there’ll ultimately be a permanent mortal cure for Mick. I want to know about the List. I want to know what happened to Coraline. There’s so much there already that could be easily expanded upon for a second, (and beyond) season. At least ABC are proving that they actually still have some respect for their viewers, and I applaud them for that!
Moonlight was the best thing on TV and I still can’t believe CBS cancelled it. So many people I’ve spoken with are still very angry at CBS and I know won’t be watching the “replacement” show next season. It’s great that ABC listened to the fans and is responding in a positive way. I can only hope that CBS will re-consider and bring Moonlight back mid-season.
Most media analysts agree CBS made a HUGE mistake canceling MOONLIGHT. The fanbase was growing exponentially – and still is. Somebody will surely snatch it up – it will survive somehow. It is too amazing on so many levels to just fade away – the fans are definitely not fading away any time soon.
It is definitely apparent that CBS could give a hoot about their fans. There was absolutely NO feasible reason to cancel Moonlight. For the timeslot it was in it did fabulously and was obviously loved by millions of fans since it won the People’s Choice Award. I would be sad to see a finale though, I would rather keep up the fight to bring it back. Kudos to ABC for thinking about their viewers though
CBS does not respect its viewers which is why I no longer watch the network. I had been a loyal CBS fan prior to the Moonlight cancellation. I made the majority of my purchasing decions based on advertisment seen on their shows. Since the cancellation I decided to hit them where it hurts and have written the advertisers that I no longer watch CBS and therefore will no longer be seeing what they are selling and I will put my money ONLY on the products advertised on the cable networks that I view. Since ABC has shown some depth of common sense I will probably check out their network as well.
I totally agree about CBS. They refuse to listen to their viewers about the cancellation of Moonlight. The show was building to season two then CBS cancels it for no good reason. CBS is no longer allowed to be watched in my house for any reason. I feel betrayed by CBS’s sneaky tactics with the whole treatment of the show and its fans. At least ABC has some respect for its viewers and is willing to listen though I want a complete season of Moonlight (and more). I am still hopeful that another network will pick up Moonlight for many successful seasons to come.
Moonlight didn’t leave loose ends, it left entire storylines out! We need a second season of this amazing show so we can find out more about the vampire nation, Mick, Josef and Coraline’s background and how Mick and Josef met. We also need to find out about that list!
How can the coolest show on TV not be coming back!?! I don’t understand this.
I hope and pray some network wakes up, looks at the numbers and realizes this show is the next huge thing. Vampires are IN.
It would be so wonderful if we could at least have closing episodes that explored the backgrounds being set up in the first season of Moonlight. Coraline’s whereabouts, Josef’s past, Mick’s history, the List of names including De Sade, Caesar, Vlad the Impaler of vampires still alive! There is at least enough there for a miniseries! If October Road deserves this kind of attention, Moonlight certainly does as well.
And talk about falling off the bandwagon. Twilight books are selling like hotcakes, the latest one coming out August 1st with the same fanfare as the Harry Potter books, along with the buildup to the movie (front cover Entertainment Weekly). Johnny Depp is going to do Barnabas Collins in a 2009 Dark Shadows. You’d think a station would realize vampires are in style!!
ABC is showing that it cares about it’s fans, I have more respect for them for that. Now CBS totally needs to get a clue, Moonlight was the best thing they had going with a loyal fan base that would have been enormous for them if they gave Moonlight a chance to grow. CBS just threw all that away like it meant nothing and the viewers do mean nothing to them, so now CBS means nothing to me, I haven’t and won’t be watching anything there again. Why bother, they will just cancel it anyway right after getting us hooked. Kudos to you ABC, I just wish Moonlight had been on your network, maybe we would still have it.
I too applaud ABC for listening to viewers. Our family have in fact switched to several ABC shows following the cancellation of Moonlight, since we now avoid CBS. Love Eli Stone. Good to know we have transferred our loyalty to a net that feels some responsibility to its viewers.
Not only did CBS indicate Moonlight would be renewed until the last minute, one executive said she would laugh if upset fans contacted her over this controversial decision. Another, hearing the entertainment critics’ remarks that Moonlight was hitting its stride at the end of its freshman–and strike-shortened season–noted that it “isn’t about quality.” What an astounding network this is: they mock the very customers they previously sought to attract and trumpet the fact that they are not interested in a quality product.
I got 2 kids in the “demo.” CBS is training them to avoid the channel and to seek “quality” programming and interaction at other networks. Good business plan?
I couldn’t agree with you more. Moonlight was the bright spot of my entire week. My flirt with fantasy. My escape. CBS betrayed everyone from the cast and crew to the fans and have no remorse for their behavior. Well, SAPkarma, folks. Their superior attitude will be their downfall. CBS is dead in my household. Unless they wise up and resurrect Moonlight, they (or their sponsors) can kiss my business goodbye.
I used to watch almost everything CBS aired. Now, that network is not allowed in my house–not only because of their stupidity in cancelling a show that had changed my life, and yes, that’s not an exaggeration, but because of the spiteful and arrogant manner with which they treated the cast and crew of this beloved show as well as the fans. It was an idiotic marketing decision, and one that may have more serious repercussions than they realized at the time. Funny thing, I always thought networks wanted viewers. CBS seems to think that they are unnecessary.
While I never tried October Road, ABC’s willingness to listen to their fans may have just gotten them a new viewer. I have sworn off CBS since they can less about their viewers and would be glad to give a company who cares enough to listen my business.
The problem here it that is just not another canceled show. The problem is that it was a great show, with a people’s choice award, that survive the strike with just 16 episodes…viewers were loyal, and they were totally mislead by CBS into a 2nd season…And here is why people is fighting so so hard and blocking all CBS since 2 months ago. The cancelation was totally unfair and CBS treated viewers with a to tal lack of respect. Shame on you CBS. And yes, CBS is blocked in all my TVs.
Nice article! CBS will not brighten my TV screen this fall due to the blatant disrespect that Ms. Tassler et. al. has shown the fans.
When the promo for the last two episodes of Moonlight touted “only two Micks left..only two Beths left” I was appalled that network execs would TAUNT the viewers like that. Then they had the gaul to show pictures of Alex O’Loughlin and Jennifer Love Hewitt stating that Friday night had two “Sexiest” stars on it! This just 3 days after canceling the show!
The final straw, however, was when Ms. T pointed her finger at the fans and LAUGHED about the decision to cancel Moonlight at the upfronts.
I’m glad to hear that ABC has a degree of respect for their viewers. I will be checking out their fall shows!
I miss Moonlight! Let’s hope some enlightened network will pick it up as a mid season replacement!
I’M STILL HAVING MOONLIGHT WITHDRAWL. CBS IS TO BLAME MOONLIGHT IS THE BEST SHOW TO GRACE TELEVISION IN A EXTEREMLY LONG TIME. PLEASE, TO ANY NETWORK THAT PICKS IT UP, I WILL FOLLOW, BE THERE, NEVER MISS A SHOW, AND FOREVER PRAISE THAT NETWORK AND MORE. IT DESERVES MORE THAN ONE SEASON AND SO DOES THAT GREAT(PERFECT)CAST. DONNA GILLIAM
Moonlight is the best thing that has come along on TV in a long time and it has me hook, line and sinker. It was the reason I started watching CBS on Friday night, the reason I tuned into Ghost Whisperer (I didn’t want to miss the very beginning of Moonlight).
The fans of Moonlight are like no other and I am so proud to be a part of this exceptional fan base. We have given of ourselves to promote charity, donate to the Red Cross, Virtual Food Drives, and yes, we are fighting for this show, Alex, Sophia and Jason. The cast and crew are remarkable!
Bottom line is I am SO disillusioned with CBS that they could cancel a show like this when it was consistently winning its time slot in the face of much adversity. Compared to everything this fledling show had to deal with, it came out on top every Friday night at 9pm. I am still in a state of disbelief and sadness over CBS’ unwarranted decision. As Matt Roush said, “CBS blew it.”
I still watch my recorded episodes of Moonlight (hoping for more) at home, visit the Moonlight forums, search Google daily for any possible news on Moonlight or the cast, and even bought an iTouch so I could take downloaded Moonlight episodes with me wherever I go (I love being able to do this!).
I am continuing to fight for Moonlight as are many, many others. I WANT MOONLIGHT BACK! ARE THE PTB LISTENING?! Someone, somewhere has to be…
Although ABC cancelled another one of my favorite shows (Women’s Murder Club), the fact that they LISTENED to their fans is enough for me to give any new show on their network a serious try.
I was a loyal CBS watcher until Moonlight was cancelled. It wasn’t even that the show was cancelled that upset me (and I WAS upset), it was the manner in which it was done. The fact that Nina Tassler thought pissing off 8 million Moonlight fans was amusing was more than enough reason for me to remove CBS from the watchlist.
I’m looking forward to seeing what NBC and ABC have to offer me – a viewer smack dab in the middle of the coveted 18-49 demographic – in the way of new shows.
I’m not the first to say “CBS blew it” Fans, casual viewers and critics having been saying this since Ms. Tassler made it known that Moonlight was cancelled.
Two things are apparent.
The first being that Moonlight was cancelled when it had a huge fan base. Dumb mistake.
CBS and or Ms. Tassler handled the cancellation very badly. Really dumb mistake.
I think somebody at CBS forgot that viewers are people, and I also think that these two issues combined has created a real problem that just isn’t going away.
Moonlight really did get a bum rap by CBS. I didn’t watch October Road, but I’m glad to see the network isn’t just ending things with those loose ends still there. Fox never did with Dark Angel when they canceled it. Fastlane either. You are always left to wonder!

Nina and the rest of the “wigs” must be blind…numbers….look at just a few websites and look at the numbers of fans and genuine comments and broken hearts…PLUS…BEST YET, THERE ARE STILL FANS OUT THERE THAT DON’T EVEN KNOW THAT IT HAS BEEN CANCELLED!!! TRAVESTY. THEY JUST DON’T GET IT…IT WON A PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD!!!! OBVIOUSLY THEY DON’T CARE ABOUT PEOPLE. THE SHOW THAT SHOULD HAVE NEVER GOTTEN A SECOND SEASON ON FRIDAY IS NUMBERS! IT SUCKS…SORRY….VERY UPSET AND LOSING MY COOL. I just don’t get it…I thought these people were supposed to be smart and savvy…MOONLIGHT FANS WILL ALL FOLLOW THE SHOW NO MATTER WHERE IT GOES….PICK IT UP FOR ONE MORE SEASON AND SEE!!!!
Moonlight is a show that came that came out of nowhere and stole hearts…..8 million hearts! We discovered Alex O’Loughlin and Jason Dohring & Sophia Myles and the wonderful characters and story-line that is Moonlight. I want Moonlight back….any way possible and as SOON AS POSSIBLE! The Year of the Vampire is at hand…….and CBS let THE best Vampire show slip right through their fingers…..
