Above is Becki Newton (Ugly Betty) at the Metropolitan Opera’s 15th Anniversary Gala. While I find Newton’s Ugly Betty character, Amanda, totally a delicious diva, I’m not that sure how I feel about her dress. I love me some sparkle, especially in this gorgeous green – that’s not the problem. In fact, it reminds me of the one video game I’ve heard of that I might actually want to play – Emerald City Confidential.

This dress is totally shapeless, though. A nip at the waist would have really helped bring this up several notches. It kind of looks like the casual velour sweatpant equivelant for the red carpet. Pockets on this green dress only add to this feeling. Sorry Becki, but I don’t think Amanda would approve!

UPDATE: OMG, they’re pants? EWWWW. This is a fashion flop for sure.

And before you think that you’ll be fine if you just throw that off – no, not really. Listen, I dig the shoes, I dig the studded clutch…but the brown and the black….I’m not feeling it. If that dress was black, you’d have been golden. Er, you know what I mean! Please, don’t ever do this again.

Here we have “celebrity couple” Brody Jenner and Playmate Jayde Nicole. Maybe they already broke up. That isn’t the point. The point is the dress! I mean, my God – do you see it? Oh, sorry, you can’t really escape the neon pink glow of that thing, now can you? This is the type of skanky dress with shotty structure an Evening Gown Barbie would have in the 80’s, and even back then I’d look at the construction and frown and sigh! I mean, maybe it’s glamorous for a Playmate…that’s…her ’style’. But oh boy, it’s skankalicious!

Who made this awful dress? Even better, the inside is silver. Some clothing construction student in high school might have made this, who knows. But when you have money, the idea is that you can spend it to look good, not tacky and cheap.  Photo from Splash News.

I’m going to outline my findings for you: The coat is on sale, although still expensive. Coats…generally are. The teal scarf is under $15.00 from PacSun.com. Black leather gloves are another item that isn’t easy to find cheap. But I found a pair from Target for $13.99, on clearance. And a brown crocodile bag would be pretty expensive…so I went on the search for an inexpensive brown leather bag. I finally succeded (finally) when I found a faux leather one from YesStyle.com! To top it off, it has the cutest name ‘Mooie’, haha. Oh, and it’s $20.00!

So, for those of you who want to recreate a look and dress like Blake Lively, it can be done!

As I understand it, a lot of boys who grew up in the 80’s and saw Labyrinth (who didn’t?) forever have a crush on Jennifer Connelly. But I think even our 80’s boys would notice the bejeweled swap-monster ‘dress’ that Connelly wore to the premiere of He’s Just Not That Into You (do NOT call it a ‘rom-com’, dear Lord). Um…we’re just not that into her dress. Or rather, we hate the dress so much we’d like to burn it and throw it under a train and then let it be used as a tarp to paint a doghouse.

Apparently, some of us can’t let go of the horrible phenomenon that was shoulder pads. And by some of us, I just mean Jennifer. She’s got great legs and the focus is drawn there, when you aren’t starring at the abhorrent sparklyness everywhere else…

On second look, are those shoulder pads…or are her shoulders that bulky and square? The above is actually one of the more flattering pictures of her. Sad.

Drew Barrymore: You are not pulling off your Audrey Hepburn deconstructed look.

Jennifer Aniston: You look leathery and like you’re trying too hard. Probably because you are.

Ginnifer Goodwin: You actually rocked your look. Pose, pose!

Scar Jo: Um, your hair makes you look mousey. Way to go. The dress is fine, however.

Truth be told (and I think it always should!) I like Mandy Moore a lot. Even when I don’t like her music, I like her. The same can not be typed for a whole lot of other people. Mandy has really taken herself into a league of her own – she can actually act AND sing. She’s also very fashionable. I’m just not sure if this picture of her leaving Barney’s is the best way to illustrate that fact. What do you think?

Some might be quick to say her legs have ‘gotten chubby’ but I don’t think that’s true at all. The three elements of the way her legs are positioned, these specific flats (shoes), and the hem length of her skirt-dress all make it LOOK like that. I love the navy dress with the buttons and the cable detail. The dark colors and the unfussy haircut look a little matronly, but ehh…who cares? I bet she’s got some fabulous frocks in her bags.

Blake Lively and Serena van der Woodsen would so very much NOT approve of these particular boots that convey Gossip Girl style for less. As you may already know, Serena van der Woodsen wore the Chinese Laundry ‘Strate’ boot, and a phenomenon was born (like ‘pooft!). Not just for the career of actress Blake Lively (Gossip Girl), but for the Strate boot.

The boot is suede, and in Lucky Magazine Lively said she loved it so much she bought a pair in every color. This cued just about everyone (yes, everyone) to go and get the pair or find a likeness from another designer. The Strate boot is now woefully out of woefully on the Chinese Laundry website but they still offer the sister Top boot which I’ve included in the collage in the upper right area. The price is just shy of $100.00.

When I saw that Victorias Secret was featuring a pair of boots very similar to the Strate boot (by Steve Madden) I thought they must be cheaper and I would let you guys know about them so you could copy the look for less. However, not only are they not cheaper, when I viewed them online ‘on the model’ they look oddly lumpy and unflattering.

So uh, unless you want to pay more to look worse…I say a big NO to these. But if you must look here, you go. If you’ve discovered a knock-off or similar type of boot to the ones that Serena wore on Gossip Girl for a little GG style (’cause they DO look comfy), let us know here! Even though she wore them last year, the trend continues on (and on, and on).

Unless you live under a rock or um, very large snail shell – you probably know that Jennifer Aniston bashed Sex and the City in December’s issue of Vogue Magazine bashed. And this is interesting! Because first you might think ‘geez, that takes balls’ – but then again, can’t she have an opinion? Not everyone can love everything. And I think it’s very possible that Aniston didn’t like the Carrie/Big cheating story arc (and the fact that they then ended up together) which mimics her real life a little too much. Basically, Aniston is free to like or dislike the show and/or movie. I happened to love the show and then greatly disliked the movie. But let us speak of more fun things…

If we could hear the SATC girls in this picture, after hearing what Aniston had to say…it might go something like this:

Kristin Davis: “Oh, it’s just so horrible for Jen – about Brad and Angelina.”

Kim Cattrall: “Kristen, it happened freaking eons ago, and Jennifer doesn’t want to be seen as a victim so don’t go on some sort of rant about this where you…”

Davis: “She’s not a victim, I just feel badly for her! I’m an empathic person, you never understood that. You never understood me! You never wanted to.”

Sarah Jessica Parker: “Kristin, maybe you should save this rerun rant for our group therapy okay? Now listen, I do feel bad for Jen too, but it was rude to insult our show in Vogue. It was a cheap shot. I’m angry about this. And hurt. Deeply hurt. I’m deeply angry and deeply hurt. And I don’t know why I’m standing like this but I’m afraid to move and risk falling over.”

Cattrall: “Don’t cry Sarah, you’re wearing a lot of eye makeup. Now, if I stand like this, do I appear slimmer?”

Cynthia Nixon: “Okay – I have to speak up now. For God sakes Kim, why did you let them dress you like The Great Pumpkin, with ruffles and all?”

Cattrall: “Sorry, we can’t all dress like we’re at a funeral Ms. Black Dress of Supreme Importance.”

Parker: “Can we not fight here? We said we weren’t going to fight.”

Davis: “Yea, besides, it’s Jennifer Aniston that’s the enemy!”

Parker: “I thought you were on her side?”

Davis:“I changed my mind because I remembered I wanted her part in Marley & Me. She stole it. Then again, Angelina Jolie stole her husband so I guess I can’t blame her for acting out like this…”

Nixon: “Why would you want to work with Owen Wilson and a dog, anyway?”

Davis: “I’ve already sunk low enough to work with Tim Allen in The Shaggy Dog. Do you not watch any of the movies I do?!”

Cattrall: “Oh please. Like ANY of you watched Ice Princess?”

Parker: “…I think I will do a movie with Jennifer Aniston to force her to like me. I’m charming and lovely, she can’t resist. Once I befriend her I will have to give her some style tips, and then she will learn to be healed through my powers.”

Davis: “Oh, then let’s ask her to join us in our power yoga classes, and to cameo in our next Sex and the City movie!”

Parker/Nixon/Cattrall in unison: “We’re not doing another movie!”

I happen to have the December ‘08 issue of Vogue in front of me. What is interesting is that Aniston just completed a movie called He’s Just Not That into You which is (follow me here) based on a book which was actually based on a quote from a Sex and the City episode. Apparently Aniston has ‘complicated’ feelings about the movie. Which might translate to ’she’ll see how it’s received by the public before pulling a Katherine Heigl (see: Knocked Up - but don’t actually SEE it) and saying she hated the movie’. She surprisingly said ‘You did?’ when Vogue writer Jonathan Van Meter told her that he enjoyed He’s Just Not That into You.

It appears she liked her sole part of the movie, but nothing else. She told Vogue, “I liked my story line, but…I don’t know. I don’t…like…girls…whining…and complaining…about…wanting a man! I never liked Sex and the City, the kind of thing where women only feel empowered once they find the Man. It’s just not up my alley. I don’t believe in it. There is nothing you can control about love.”

Well, while, like I said, I didn’t like the SATC movie (which did stray from the core mission statement of the TV show) – the show itself was not about girls whining and thinking they must have a man. It just wasn’t. To generalize all of those seasons and an entire phenomenon as a show about girls whining is majorly ridiculous. Not everyone is a fan of Sex and the City, sure. They don’t have to be. It just seems odd to dislike the show for reasons that aren’t even true.

And if Aniston really hates this type of stuff, then what was she doing on Friends, making like, a million bucks an episode to be Rachel Green who often did whine about love (Ross). Was that only okay because the show didn’t focus only on just female leads? Ugh. I don’t even want to get into any of that.

– Tangent about Angelina Jolie — While I know that Brad Pitt broke up with Aniston for Angelina Jolie I guess I never realized how it exactly happened – and to be honest, didn’t care that much. But, right in print here, I can see that Pitt and Jolie were cheating together and that these times of their ‘first love’ have been documented by Jolie, herself – which is unbelievably tacky. I mean, am I wrong or do you just NOT need to talk about how great it was when you met your husband while you snuck around behind his wife’s back – in a national publication?! Tell your friends, but leave it out of Vogue, Jolie.
