Remembering River Phoenix…

River Phoenix

On October 31st, 1993 at 1:51 a.m. River Phoenix died in front of the Viper Room.  I was 18 and I remember that River’s death was one of the first major celebrity deaths I had experienced. (The next one being Kurt Cobain in April of 1994.) I remember sitting in front of the TV with my mom and we would watch all those entertainment type shows like Entertainment Tonight and Inside Edition and listen to what happened. (I am sure if it was like the time now we would have been on the internet )

It was something that shook my world. River had such a career ahead of him and he died so young. I see now that there has been many after him like Heath Ledger and DJ AM that have died way before they should have. And I was at such a young age I didn’t think that I would have to experience something like that again. It shouldn’t be happening and we should be able to live life happy without having to worry about the great ones that left us. But it doesn’t happen that way. That’s why I’m glad that I’m a writer and I’m able to be able to talk about them and remember them.

Even 16 years later people can’t stop talking about River. There was a quote at the end of an article that inspired this piece for me and I wanted to quote the quote the writer used there by James Taylor. It seemed to sum it up all nicely.

I’ve seen lonely times when I could not find a friend, but I always thought that I’d see you again…

One Of DJ AM’s Last Photo Shoots

DJ AM

I have been thinking about this post all day. I was flip-flopping whether I should do it or not. I didn’t want to be disrespectful at all in posting these pictures. But since I haven’t written anything about DJ AM’s death I thought I could say some words now.

When I first heard about DJ AM and his death it reminded me of Heath Ledger. For those of you that don’t know I covered that story for weeks non-stop. It burned a permanent hole in my heart. And DJ AM’s death was running along those lines (and I ended up getting a tattoo in memory of Heath too). Almost exactly. So when I started hearing about it I shut off and couldn’t hear anymore. And that meant I wasn’t going to write about it either. I wanted to know all the facts before I went talking about it.

DJ AM to me was an inspiration. He was an amazing DJ for one. Something that I wanted to be growing up, I don’t think I would ever be as great as he was. And he conquered that plane crash (another story I know all too well).  The world has lost an amazing man, someone who was taken way before he should have been.

The photographer that did this shoot had this to say about DJ AM while he was shooting the pictures: I was totally impressed with him. He just flew from [Vegas] to LA, but was as nice as can be. We had a great shoot, but what I remember most is just how down to earth he was.  He did tell me he had almost 1,000 pairs of sneakers.

R.I.P. DJ AM you will be missed.

First Pictures Of DJ AM Since The Accident

Posted by taylor blue on September 29, 2008 | 2 Comments

DJ AM was seen for the first time today since the airplane accident that claimed 4 people 9 days ago. He was attending his friend Chris Baker’s funeral.

DJ AM, whose real name is Adam Goldstein, arrived in a limousine to pay respects to Baker, 29. More than 300 people turned out to honor Baker, and many friends stood up to share their memories of him at the memorial service, which lasted two hours.

I think Adam looks better than I thought. I’m glad we finally got a chance to finally see he’s okay. Our thoughts are with Chris Baker’s family today.
