I know this post really isn’t about advertising but really about a PSA that often plays on the channels my kids watch. I do have a teenage daughter and I was struggling on how to talk to her about drugs and alcohol and things like that. I know that I’m putting myself out there for this post but I think that the effectiveness of the PSA has to be addressed. And who am I to hide anything usually?
My daughter had watched this PSA a couple of times and then she looked at me and said, “Wow, that’s something I don’t want to do.” I know that having this on the kids channels sure helped me. And it’s something that we have discussed further since she has come to the realization that drugs aren’t good. Okay, please understand, I’m not being naive in thinking that she might actually do what she says and not do drugs but to have the chance to talk about it and open that door is more important.
Natalie Portman is starring in the movie, Brothers, that comes out this weekend. She is also the cover girl for the January 2010 issue ofMarie Claire. In the magazine she talks about drugs and her romantic life. Here are the highlights:
On being a late bloomer while attending Harvard University: “OK, so I didn’t really go to high school parties and yeah, I didn’t touch pot till I was in my 20s. I didn’t get flat-out drunk until I went to college. But I think that’s a good thing in many ways.”
On her rumored romance with Sean Penn: “He’s obviously someone I’m friends with I mean, not ‘hey, wassup?’ friends, but we were all on the [Cannes 2008] jury togetherâ€â€Alfonso [Cuarón] and Marjane [Satrapi]â€â€and we had a really great time, and then…It was one of those things where you’re like, ‘Oh, my God! I’m that person who’s caught in this shitty rumor brigade.’ You can’t win. You don’t say anything and everyone’s like, ‘It’s true.’ You say something, and you’re keeping the story alive. It’s bad, bad news.”
