Dion Roy & I: The Interview
Posted by WillowRaine on July 17, 2009 | 2 Comments

Dion Roy An up and coming artist on the indie music scene, with breathtaking lyrics and a haunting, original sound.
I can’t take credit for finding him on my own, I was introduced to him by my amazing friend Jodie, and I owe her a world of thanks.
Not only have I found some killer new music, but a guy with a great mind, and wit. So, when she told me that he was willing to take a chance, and time out of his hectic schedule (he’s on tour) to do an interview with me, I squee’d, eeped and jumped up and down.
Then I calmed down, acted like I had some sense (though I don’t have much, I know), and I sent him an email asking him if he would oblige me (more like humor me I’m willing to bet).
Dion was very gracious, and below is the product of our interview:
Okay, because I’m an odd, break the ice kind of girl, before we get down to business, I thought I’d ask some off the wall questions, if that’s alright with you?
What is your favorite movie, of all time. Not top three, if you had to choose ONE, what would it be and why?
Wow – that’s a commitment – If I HAD to pick one movie across all genres, galaxies, and/or realms Id go with Shawshank Redemption…or Hot Fuzz….Or Evil Dead 2….or Shaun of the Dead….. or….whoops, that’s 3. Not fair, I’m a movie guy. I watch a new movie almost every night.
Favorite Comedian?
I really like British Comedian, Eddie Izzard. He’s so strange, yet so brilliant. As different as he is from everyone else, he still understands how to relate to people, and what it takes to make them laugh.
Most favorite and least favorite food?
Mexican, and Bad Mexican. People in my inner circle sometimes just refer to me as “taco” because I really do love them. They are a nutritious part of my daily intake. Except for the ones at San Loco, I Overdosed on that place. Least favorite food = seafood, no me gusta.
Okay, so now, I suppose I should hit you with the musical stuff, yes? lol Since that is why we’re here…
I read on your website, that you basically “ARE” music. It seems that you eat, sleep, breathe music. What pulled you in?
I don’t know what exactly pulled me in. It’s always been there in some way or another. There’s usually a specific reason to like something, but what keeps me drawn to music is something sub-conscious Id imagine, though it does beat working at an investment bank or getting your teeth pulled
Are you like some artists who say that their music IS the epitome of passion? Do you see it as a relationship? Something larger than yourself?
Most of the music I write has a component of someone else’s story in it mixed in with my own. I find so many stories just being a spectator, so it does make sense that is larger than myself – especially since I take so much from the world around me when I write.
I don’t just hear your music, I FEEL it. Pure, raw emotion exudes from the first note, to the last. Is that something you hoped for? Or was it as simple as you wishing someone would merely like, and connect with a song, or two?
This album is a very personal project. If I was told nobody would connect to it or even hear it – I would still have finished it. This album really does have a lot of emotional times that I was looking to leave behind, and as I finished it, I knew that I could put some of those things to bed so to speak. I definitely want people to connect with my music, and I truly did try to make sure that every piece of it was something that people could relate to at the same time that I was communicating a story.
Tell me about your debut album. I don’t mean give me the synopsis that you would give anyone, I don’t want anything you’ve memorized. Speak to me about it from your soul. You cite that it’s very personal, give me some insight into that.
I’m very private about the stories and ideas behind these songs. Each song did stem from a personal experience that I, or someone special in my life, was going through. A lot of the people for which I sing, I choose to keep silent. I can say, though, that this debut album was a rite of passage that has been brewing within my for a long time, and my getting them out of me, I feel like I’m ready to start a new chapter. Already, the songs I’ve started writing since I concluded the debut album, come from a totally different voice that I didn’t realize was waiting for me to catch up.
Since you’re on tour, are there any amenities that you don’t have on the road, that you miss from home?
I’m am not a very high maintenance dude. I shower when I’m forced to, and I’m happy to let my beard grow. My vices stem from the techie side of personality, but luckily due to my Blackberry and my Macbook, I have pretty much everything I need right by my side. I am a family man, though, so if anything, that is the hardest part of touring.
How do you relax, after a show?
The experience of performing relaxes me. Once it’s behind me, I feel relaxed. Again, I’m a sucker for movies, burgers, tacos, and hanging out with friends and running – that keeps my “center”
What has been your favorite venue to perform in thus far?
Performing at the Viper Room in LA was a pretty big deal, just because it is such a coveted Rock & Roll venue on the Hollywood strip. But honestly, I love the more intimate performances as well, like the ones I do at Arctica Bar in my hometown of Manhattan, where everybody knows my name…!
Give me your favorite fan story, it can be touching, or goofy. I want to know, since you see so many people, are there people that, as fans, stand out?
There are definitely people that stand out. I am constantly amazed by how supportive these people are, and genuinely interested in whats going on and what they can do to help. People get really creative, but the best thing they can do is show up, and talk about it, and those are the fans. It doesn’t sound exciting but its the connectors that make it all happen. Does that make sense? I hope so, Im writing this on very little sleep on my California tour from the road.
Dion Roy Surely, if not definitely, very soon to be a household name. You should check him out at DION ROY , or if you have a twitter, (if you don’t shame on you!) follow him at TWEET TWEET!
Make sure you familiarize yourself with him, or you’ll be the outcast when everyone else is buzzing about how much they LOVE his music.
